The Wonderful Words for This Wednesday are “New Beginnings”
September 1st might as well be January 1st for me. All my life I’ve measured years by the school year, September through June.
Although January officially marks the start of a new calendar year, it never made sense to me to create New Years Resolutions or goals in January. I mean, it’s the MIDDLE of the year as far as I’m concerned, and it’s the dead of winter.
September, on the other hand, has always been the time for new beginnings for me. It is a time of coming back together with your community and starting fresh together.
As a kid, it was a new grade level, new clothes, new teacher, new friends, AND the most exciting part – NEW SCHOOL SUPPLIES!
As a grown-up, it didn’t change much. First it was 4 years of college, then 18 years of teaching, then kids and their school years. So, for as long as I can remember, the beginning of the school year was about a fresh start, new ideas, a new routine, and of course NEW SCHOOL SUPPLIES.
Ode to the School Supplies
This post isn’t really about new school supplies, but I think they deserve a paragraph at least.
Don’t you just love the first time you see the new school supplies in the stores? It’s that familiar sight and smell of a brand new box of Crayola crayons, the new boxes of Ticonderoga Pencils (it ALWAYS has to be Ticonderoga!) with fresh tips and clean pink erasers on top, glue sticks, sharp scissors, see through rulers, markers, and the classic set of watercolors. THEN, for the coup de gras, you get to pick a new pencil box to hold all of your goodies and a new backpack to hold the pencil box! C’mon, are ya with me on this?
New Beginnings
Okay, back to the main topic. I am giddy with the new beginning before me this year. BOTH kids are in school, new things are happening in my business, ‘Play Art With Kim’, and I turn a year older in a few days. I am looking ahead at this year with anticipation and hope.
Here is a sampling of the things I’m looking forward to this year:
- Having structure: getting into our new routine for this season of our lives
- Finding new depths in my creativity
- Reaching new goals in my business
- My kids finding strong friendships
- Going to my boys’ football and soccer games
- Organizing my office as well as my closet (too big a goal? probably!)
- Learning even MORE tech skills
This list will evolve over the year, but today, those are the top 7 things I’m looking forward to this new year.
What about you?
