The Wonderful Words for this Wednesday are, “Combining ALL the Creative Skills”
I used to fill with dread when it was a friend’s birthday and I didn’t have a good card to give nor the time to go shopping for one.
You see, I used to LOVE picking out cards for my family and friends in Hallmark (does this date me?) or the card aisle at the store, BUT it took me FOREVER. I had to wait until I found one that made me feel verklempt upon reading it OR one that made me laugh right out loud.
Well, that luxury ended abruptly upon children entering the scene. I mean, I could hardly get the 10 things that were on my list without one of us fully melting down, much less browse the card aisle, and Hallmark was out of the question.
Formal Apology
I want to take a moment here to send out a formal apology to all of my friends and family who did NOT receive a card on their birthday during those early childhood years. My mental health was fragile people! It was survival only, and I’m happy to say that all of us have survived thus far.
So…. I’M SOOOO SORRY!
Nowadays
Now, there is only giddy excitement when it’s a friend or a family member’s birthday. Why? Because I MAKE all my own handmade cards. This is a labor of love, and it feels very special to give out something handmade that is unique and one of a kind.
Here are the skills I’ve learned and how I pull them all together to create handmade cards/gifts:
- I learned to keep a BUJO (otherwise known as a Bullet Journal). Because the Bullet Journal is open-ended, I made a monthly birthday spread in the beginning so it would be MUCH harder for me to forget someone’s birthday. (I’d put a pic of it here but…..I feel like that’s dangerous!)
- I learned modern calligraphy AND hand lettering.
- I learned how to emboss things.
- I gathered lots of fun items to make collage cards.
- I learned to draw florals and many other things.
- I learned to watercolor
Yesterday was a special friend’s birthday and I combined all the skills above (except watercolor) to make her card which is featured above.
With each of my acquired skills, my goal has always been to share my knowledge with you all. I love to share the joy of creating!
This brings us to the ‘WHY’
Why should you join a workshop? So you can experience joy for starters, AND so you can wow your friends and family with handmade cards and gifts. Christmas is coming!!!
Since the start of “Play Art With Kim” I’ve taught several card-making workshops including the skills of watercolor, collage, and calligraphy and my latest workshop was how to ink florals. That one was quite popular and I’ll be doing that one again soon so stay tuned!
Next Opportunities
The next workshop is “Learn Modern Calligraphy Without Tears” which will be two sessions:
September 25th 1-3 & October 9th 1-3 @ Black Fern Coffee. There are still a few spots left!
Once you have the skill of writing in calligraphy, you can make beautiful tags for all of your gifts AND make cards AND address your envelopes in a stunning way. You can make hand-lettered signs and frame them for gifts etc. (again, Christmas is just around the corner!). The possibilities are endless.
Click the buttons below for more info on what each session will entail and to sign up if you’d like to snag your spot:
Upcoming
October – Chalkboard workshop (chalkboard included) – most likely held on October 23rd @ The Black Fern
November Not completely sure yet, but I think it will be Christmas Cards. I’m also not sure of the date yet as I need to work around Thanksgiving)
December will be a month off because everyone’s weekends are booked including mine!
January, I’ll be holding a “How to set up a BUJO (bullet journal)” workshop.
Stay tuned for exact dates, locations, designs, etc.
I’d be thrilled if you sent me a message about what classes you’d like to see or which of the above ones you’re most excited about.
