The Wonderful Word for Wednesday is “Doodle”
Don’t you just love that word, ‘doodle’? I mean, just say it outloud a few times and you will find yourself smiling.
Here’s What Dictionary.com Says About the Word Doodle:
- to draw or scribble idly
- to waste time in aimless or foolish activity
For today, we are using definition #1. Honestly, we can just throw out definition #2, it feels rude and we don’t have time or energy for rude in our lives. Am I right?
I am here at my dad’s this week and the first day of my visit we just relaxed, a LOT, and boy did I need it! We spent delightful hours sitting in the Adirondack chairs on the deck watching the water, visiting, AND doodling. Well, I doodled as I don’t sit well without something to do with my hands. Many of you, I know, can relate.
Usually, I arrive with a large basket FULL to the brim of every art supply I could squeeze in it, but this time, I simply brought a sketch book, some scratch paper, a pencil, and various sizes of black fineliners (click here to see my favorite sketch book, my favorite sketching pencil, and my favorite fineliners).
In case you’re wondering what a fineliner is, it is simply a black pen that writes in one solid thin line, and you can get them in various sizes from super fine 0.03 to a bold 1mm. My favorite sizes are the 01, 05, and 08. I press too hard to use the super fine ones!
I have been obsessed with black and white florals lately and I simply cannot get enough of drawing them.
This floral doodle was so fun, easy, and beautiful that I thought I’d share the process with you.
Flower Doodle Tutorial
- Sketch out a loose flower with pencil until you get the petals just the way you want them. Overlap some of the petals for good measure. Elongated heart shaped petals work great for this doodle. Do NOT overthink this step, just get some petals on there, the less perfect the better.
- Get your 05 fineliner (the bigger one) and start by making tiny little circles for the middle, then outline the petals with the same pen. (You can do this with ANY pen, or even a pencil if you don’t have fineliners)
- Place one or two curved lines inside each petal with the 05 liner.
- When your ink is fully dry, erase all of the pencil marks.
- Now pick up the 01 fineliner and fill in the spaces in each petal with more curved lines following the shape of the space. (Again, if you don’t have fineliners, one size pen or pencil will still look amazing.)
Some tips:
Do NOT worry if your lines are not perfect. It WILL look amazing when it’s all complete.
Do NOT worry if your lines are not equally spaced, in fact, it looks better if some are and some aren’t.
You canNOT mess this doodle up. It is going to look super cool no matter how you do it.
So, the next time you’re sitting at a conference, or in a meeting (shhhh), or in front of a humdrum show on Netflix, pick up a pen or a pencil and give this little flower doodle a try. Yours will look different than mine as no two are alike!
