The Wonderful Words for This Wednesday are “Christmas Craft”

Let’s make a super cute Christmas craft shall we?

I recently went shopping with a few friends and happened to find some very cool old music books in an antique shop.  I’m always looking for fun papers or music sheets to use for mixed media pieces when I go to vintage or antique shops and this place did not disappoint!

Throughout the shop there were handmade signs and crafts and that started my creative wheels turning, so I got home and started dragging out some of my mixed media papers etc. and this project ensued.

If you are wondering what ‘mixed media’ means but are too afraid to ask, it’s simple: mixed media art is a making art with more than one medium (art supply).

This project is easy enough you can do it with your kids or grandkids!  Let’s get started.

Supplies:

  • base sheet of paper: I used an old music sheet, but you can use anything.
  • fun colorful paper in colors that go well together ( I used craft paper from the same little booklet so that they all went well together)
  • scissors
  • glue stick or any type of glue
  • black pen
  • gray marker

Directions:

Step 1: Draw a template for your bulbs onto a thin piece of cardboard or some heavy yardstick (this is basically an egg shape).  If you’re struggling, just look up some pictures of Christmas bulbs and mimic the shape.  You just need ONE good one for a template, see my white one above.

Step 2: Use the template you made in step 1 to trace bulbs onto the fun colored papers you collected or made.  Be sure to create an odd number of them for your composition, and then cut them all out.

Step 3: Now draw the little doohickey that attaches the bulb to the wire onto each bulb.

Step 4: draw a wire that winds and  curls around the page and connects all of the bulbs.

Step 5: Optional – use a gray marker to add shadows on the right side of all the bulbs.  You can even add a shadow to the wire.

Step 6: Frame it or not!

Is your mind brimming with other ideas?  I mean, you could cut circles out and make them into Christmas ornaments instead of bulbs, etc. etc. etc., the possibilities are endless!

As always, I’d love to see what you do!
