The wonderful Word for this Wednesday is ‘watercolor‘.

Since I’ve decided that April is Watercolor Month, it’s the obvious choice for our last Wonderful Word this month.

If you are brand new to watercolor and the only set you have laying around is your kid’s crayola set, you are not alone! Many of us started anew as grownups. I did!

I don’t remember loving it as a kid. Thinking back, I’m pretty sure it’s because when we did it in school, they simply gave us a sheet of regular paper and the crayola set of watercolors and you were told to paint a rainbow, or a tree or something, just like you’d paint with any other medium.

Now, I must clarify, I’m not bashing Crayola by any means! Crayola is a magical company, bringing affordable art supplies to families and schools etc. It’s a household icon! They are FANTASTIC at what they do, and they have various lines of art supplies which are all amazing. So it was less about the paints, and more about the instruction and the paper.

The paper would buckle and warp and the watery paint would run down the hills and valleys created by the warping. It looked terrible! I can still picture the end result and feel the feels of disappointment back then. I thought to myself, “I can’t paint”, and “I’m bad at art”.

What I’m saying is that most of our second grade teachers were not artists as well. They were teachers! And believe me, I know from years of experience, that if you are a teacher it is ALL consuming!

So if this was your experience as well, I’d urge you to try watercolors anew. You might just fall in love with the journey as I have. BUT, you’ll need to start out with the proper supplies and a good beginner’s tutorial.

When I first attempted watercolor painting as an adult, I bumbled along and eventually figured out how to properly use them through books from the library and youtube tutorials. What was missing was tutorials for the ABSOLUTE beginner. Where can you find that?

Well I’m so glad you asked! I just so happen have a whole watercolor series of email tutorials written just for the absolute beginner. I share the exact supplies (with direct links)  that are affordable but great quality, as well as the basic methods of watercolors such as Wet on Wet, wet on dry, watercolor and salt, watercolor and plastic wrap, and more!

My goal here is simply to share the joy of watercolor with others. It is a mindfulness activity that I now crave everyday. It is peaceful and relaxing and FUN to just play with watercolors.
